WikiStyle

 Edit this page
There are some style conventions that we'd like to have on this Wiki. If you think of more, please add them.

Edit / Add Pages / Refactor

This Wiki is new and so the few pages that exist tend to get filled up with discussion and branch topics. As soon as you see a new line of discussion or topic getting more than a sentence or two, you are encouraged to create a new page for it, and move the existing discussion there.

If you read through a set of discussions and you think you begin to see a clear picture: Write it up! Even a clear list of alternatives, or issues or main points is major contribution.

Text Hints

This Wiki uses newlines to separate paragraphs, not blank lines like some other Wikis.

Typing a tab in most browsers is annoying. Alas, Wakka uses tabs for indents and lists. Here's how to enter a tab in some browsers:
Safari (Mac OS X): option-tab

If you don't want something to be a WikiName, surround it in double double quotes. LikeThis.

WikiNames

A WikiName should not start with "The", or "Wheat". Every page in this Wiki is about Wheat and so there is no need to have that in the titles of pages.

On the other hand, pages which are about the Wiki itself can (if it makes sense) start with "Wiki".

There is nothing wrong with long names: ContinuedElseIfSyntax.

Try to avoid plurals unless the singular doesn't make sense. Otherwise you end up with two pages FooBar and FooBars.

Since, at the start, all pages are essentially discussions, you don't need to put the word "Discussion" in the page name. Once a topic gets settled a bit, the active discussions should be moved to appropriate sub-topic pages. If, for either a desire to archive, or a because something is still being debates - then a page with "Discussion" in the name makes sense.

Discussion and Comment Content

Discussion can appear either at the bottom of a page, or in-line.

At the bottom of the page add a Discussion heading if it is missing (use a horizontal line, ----, followed by ====Discussion====). Then add your entry, user name and date like this:

I think that all math operations should be double precision floating point. We just don't need single precision or integer arithmetic at all.
--MarkLentczner, 2003-03-02

If the entry is in-line, indent and use the notes formatting style (surround the text in double single quotes), like this:
I think that all math operations should be double precision floating point. We just don't need single precision or integer arithmetic at all. --MarkLentczner, 2003-03-02

When discussions have been distilled and folded into the text, either remove the discussion (hey, we have history!), or move it to a page with History added to the title.

Cross References

If there are related pages, put a "See:" line at the bottom of the page like this:

See: TextFormattingGuide, LinkFormattingGuide, WikiName

If there are external links that are referred to repeatedly then make only the first reference a link, and put a "References:" line at the bottom like this:

Refrences: XML

Also, if the reference is generally useful, consider adding it to the WebBibliography.
