BriefIntroToWiki

 Edit this page
A Wiki is a web site built collectively by a community. Almost every page is editable by everyone in the community. Even this one. Really! It is quick and easy to create and edit pages, and they are linked together automatically.

Think of it as a giant set of hyperlinked white boards. And everyone has markers.

Note: To edit in this Wiki you must be a registered user.

About Pages

Each page has a name. If the content of a page mentions the name of another page, it automatically becomes a link. Page names must be in a special format called a WikiName (which is a WikiName itself, as is SandBox and TextFormattingGuide... getting the idea?)

To edit a page, click on the Edit this page link at the top right of the page. You have to be logged in to edit.

If a page mentions the name of a page that doesn't exist yet, then it becomes a link with a question mark after it, like this: ThisPageDoesNotExist?. Please don't create it! Clicking on that link lets you edit the initial contents of the page. When you save it, the page is created and all links from other pages automatically work. So this is how you create a page: You edit some other page that will link to your new page; Add some text including the WikiName of your new page; Save your edit; Then click on the question mark link in the page to get to the edit form for the new page.

About Content

The content of pages is generally just text. For the most part, you just type as you'd expect and the Wiki does the Right Thing. There is some simple mark up you can do to express some formatting. See the TextFormattingGuide.

As discussed above, links from page to page are generally automatic. Just use a WikiName to name a page (exiting or not). There are ways to put in links to other sites, and links to other Wikis. And there are ways to make the link text be different than the page name itself. See the LinkFormattingGuide.

About Wiki in General

There is a wealth of information about Wiki in the original Wiki by Ward Cunnigham. Some interesting pages on that Wiki are Wiki:WikiWikiWeb, Wiki:NewUserPages, Wiki:OneMinuteWiki.

If you are interested a discussion of Wiki, see Wiki:WikiDesignPrinciples, Wiki:WhyWikiWorks and (of course) Wiki:WhyWikiWorksNot.

We are also very fond of Wiki:WabiSabi.

All the links in the above paragraphs are InterWikiLinks, which allow
one Wiki to link to another almost as easily as links within.
